Fiat Linea Overview

The Fiat Linea has been in the market for a long time now. The automaker has been selling the same generation of the C-segment sedan since 2009 and that’s stretching it far too long. The Linea has, however, received a lot of updates over the years. This time around, Fiat has plonked in the 1.4-litre T-Jet petrol engine in a higher state of tune apart from a couple of new features. So let’s check out what the 2016 Linea 125S is all about.

Fiat Linea Design

The Fiat Linea 125S is based on the current generation Linea. t has got some cosmetic changes too. The Fiat Linea 125S looks premium no doubt and is also a desirable car. It was always a beautiful looking car and still is. The Linea can still give a run for their money to many a competition, even after so many years.

The Fiat Linea 125S has a black coloured front grille with the outside ring plated in chrome. The headlamps remain the same as on other Lineas. The front bumper is also the same but it gets a black centre part. The fog lamp bezels are also black in colour and this gives it an urban car appeal. The rear portion is the same, the only difference being new 125S badge on the boot lid. There is also a chrome plated exhaust tip present, which adds to the sporty appeal in the car. Fiat hasn’t made any changes on the Linea as it was showcased at the Auto Expo.

The interiors have the same layout. However, what the Fiat Linea 125S gets are some additional features. For instance, there is now a touchscreen system which also has navigation. The Microsoft Blue & Me is now gone. The new touchscreen is a bit small, but it is good enough. The Fiat Linea 125S gets rich leather interiors and speaks a lot about attention to quality. The Linea 125S comes loaded with features like automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers and in fact this is the only sedan in its segment that still offers the twin-aero wipers, which are a lot more expensive than the regular wipers. The tough build quality and the spacious interiors make Fiat Linea a great sedan. The rear legroom is not in the league of most sedans though. Fiat Linea Gearbox

The 2016 Fiat Linea 125S is powered by the same 1.4-litre T-Jet petrol engine that was also offered earlier. This time around, it is tuned to produce 125 HP of power which translates into an increase of 11 HP over the previous tune. Top whack comes in at 5000 RPM while peak torque of 210 Nm is churned out between 2000-3500 RPM. The engine comes mated to the same 5-speed manual gearbox and 0-100 km/hr timing is claimed to be 10.4 seconds (we timed it at 10.7 seconds on the VBOX). 100 km/hr in top gear comes in at 2500 RPM. The engine has brilliant pulling power right from low RPMs. Once the turbo kicks in post 2000 RPM, the Linea 125S accelerates like a rocket and the sheer feeling is thrilling. Power delivery continues all the way to higher RPMs and the sedan never feels out of breath. The engine loves to be revved all the way to 6500 RPM. In terms of fuel efficiency, the claimed figure is 14.2 km/l but we managed to extract 5-6 km/l under hard driving and 8-9 km/l under relaxed driving. The clutch has a very long travel but still doesn’t feel too heavy. The gearbox is notchy as before.

Performance is another section where Fiat Linea makes an strong impressions as compared to its rivals. The strong suspension system of the car allows the car to smoothly pass over all kind of potholes and doesn’t let passengers realize small bumps and cracks over road. The front portion of the car bears independent wheel, double telescopic dampers, helical coil springs, with stabilizer while the rear is supported by double acting telescopic dampers and torsion beam type helical coil spring.

The multi functional steering of the car excels in all parameters and allows smooth handling over all kind of speeds and roads. The steering feels light except for the twists and turns where it gets a bit heavier due to its strong suspension. The 5-speed gear shifting is smooth and offers excellent drivability over all kind of city roads and freeways.

The Fiat Linea 125S comes with ABS and dual front airbags. There is no other safety tech on offer. Fiat’s service has been pretty dismal and there are very few service centres in the country. Fiat Linea sets a high benchmark in C segment with its stunning looks, well done interiors, and above par driving dynamics. It seems the Linea was not designed by engineers but by an artist in the serene meadows of Italy. In modern times, where aggression and fierce looking cars are in vogue, the Linea chooses to illustrate relaxed lines.This voluptuous looking sedan is the biggest in its class. Designed in ““Centro Stile Fiat”, the design centre in Turin, the Linea is based on the same platform as Grande Punto. Both the cars have the same design philosophy where the classic styling meets the modern trend.

A facelift for the existing Linea is just round the corner. It gets a grand radiator grille with inter linked slats. The large headlights with twin barrel lamps look very elegant. The bonnet does not feature unnecessary crease lines and just flows to the windshield. It also offers rain sensing wipers and dark sensing auto headlights. The T-Jet badging also features on the radiator grille which looks like a typical RS-esque of Skoda.

The long stretched look of the Linea Classic makes it look very subtle yet impressive. It also offers a ground clearance of 185mm which is the best for tackling bad roads. It gets chrome under window line as well as chrome lines on the doors too. The ORVMs are very nicely planted on the front doors and are body coloured. These mirrors can be adjusted electrically. It could have done with turn indicators embedded in them but perhaps the Italians thought it would spoil the design.

Since this is the T-Jet variant, it gets a boot lid spoiler and chrome exhaust to highlight its sporty nature. The exhaust pipe does not blend well with the overall design as it sticks out in a weird way. But overall, the Linea comes across as a very beautiful car to look at. It is a welcome change over the out-of-the-production-line looking types.

On the interior front, the Linea Classic lacks quite a lot of equipment you will find in cars of a similar price. Manually adjustable rear view mirrors aren’t very welcome at this price point as even hatchbacks are now coming with electrically adjustable ORVMs. Cost cutting is evident at several places. Although the car has four power windows, the driver side door has controls only for the front two power windows. The classy white Linea cluster is missing too but what’s really shocking is the spare wheel, which is a space saver of size 165/80/14, when the car runs on a tad bigger 175/70/14 tyres. Other things missing include keyless entry, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted audio controls, etc.

On the brighter side, Fiat has retained one touch power windows, twin glovebox, multi-information display, follow me home headlamps and rear centre arm rest on the Linea Classic. The vehicle also turns off the headlights on its own if you forget to do so. Space inside the cabin of the Linea is generous although the sloping roof line does eat into the headroom of rear seat passengers. The seats are firm but comfortable and the visibility all around is good too, thanks to the large glass area. Fiat makes some solid cars and the Linea Classic is no exception. The vehicle feels well put together and the doors shut with a resounding thud. The AC is a chiller and the audio system offers decent sound quality. The Linea is the only car in its segment which comes with double-blade wipers which clean the windshield brilliantly. So as far as the cabin goes, the Linea Classic does offer more than its rivals with more solidity and a generous boot which can hold 500-litres of luggage.

When Fiat launched the Linea Classic, we all were skeptical about how it would perform as the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine only outputs 75 BHP of power and 190 Nm of torque, which is down on the regular Linea’s 90 HP and 209 Nm. Considering the regular Linea isn’t quick and the Linea Classic also weighs as much, we were expecting disappointing performance. However the Linea Classic has surprised us with the way it moves. The engine lacks VGT which has somehow become a blessing for the car in city conditions. Unlike the VGT equipped Linea diesel, this lower output motor has turbolag well contained which gives it slick performance in the city.

The Linea Classic’s mill is very tractable and power delivery is linear. You will never feel the lack of ponies in city conditions. Want to amble around town at 20 km/hr, sure you can do that in third gear without a hitch. 100 km/hr comes up in third gear near the redline while cruising on the highways in top gear at 100 km/hr will make the tacho needle tick at around 2500 RPM. What further complements the Linea Classic’s drivability is the light clutch with a dead pedal although the gearbox is a bit resistant and isn’t a fast shifting unit. One can expect a mileage of 14 km/l in the city and 16 km/l on the highway with 100% AC usage.

The meat of the performance comes between 2000-3500 RPM and post that the Linea Classic’ powerplant really starts to lose breath. NVH levels are good in the lower part of the powerband but once past 3000 RPM, the oil burner starts becoming audible and is very loud post 4000 RPM. The motor itself is very lethargic in the higher end of the power band and redline comes in at 5100 RPM. This isn’t a car you would want to rev hard as there is no top end power. Thus the Linea Classic doesn’t far well in outright acceleration and 0-100 km/hr takes around 18 seconds. You need to downshift on the highways to get going while overtaking.

Fiat Linea Classic Driving

The suspension setup is as best as it can be in this segment. Be it broken roads, speed breakers etc nothing feels uncomfortable. The soft spring suspensions can absorb anything. Even at high speeds, the car seems very much planted on the road and does not drift away when thrown on tight corners. Braking of Linea is decent similar to the other variants. If you enjoy driving petrol cars, then the Linea is definitely a car one would enjoy driving. It scores very high on fun factor but then the fuel efficiency is the least compared to other versions. The company claims an ARAI mileage of 15.7 Kmpl whereas we got a realistic 10 kmpl.
